Out of the many archaeological sites dotting the Vipava Valley, the Roman fortress Castra with its mighty wall and towers, and the Roman fortress of Ad Pirum in Hrušica, are two of the most important ones.

Ajdovščina traces its roots back to the 3rd century AD. In that period, the Romans set up a fortress called Ad Fluvium Frigidum (\"by the frigid river\") on the banks of the Hubelj whose remains survive until the present day.
Together with its partners (cultural clubs and freelancers in culture from Ajdovščina), the Youth Hostel Ajdovščina has been hosting workshops and multi-day colonies for various artists (theatre, sculpture, painting, handicrafts, visual arts and design, film art…).

The area around Ajdovščina has always been shaped by the forces of nature. Throughout the area’s tumultuous geological past, many organisms have left their imprints in the rocks (flysch, sandstone, limestone, dolomites, fossils and corals).

A circular path runs from the village of Ustje through Dolenje, over Planina where local luminary Matija Vertovec held a position, to Šmarje where he was born, looping back to Vrtovče and Tevče to the start in Ustje. The route is lined with a host of natural and cultural landmarks.
