Cultural Heritage

In collaboration with different partners (culture clubs and autonomous individuals coming from Ajdovščina and working in the field of culture), the Ajdovščina Youth Hostel organizes workshops and colonies lasting for a few days which deal with different areas of art (theatre, sculpting, painting, handicraft, visual arts and design, film...). Furthermore, Youth Hostel Ajdovščina oversees a cultural program including lectures on all areas of culture as well as weekly events, such as exhibitions, poetry and prose nights, short theatre plays, art film and amateur film productions nights, etc.

Cultural-historical heritage
The history of the town of Ajdovščina goes back to the 3rd century. It is then that the Romans built a fort by the Hubelj River named Ad Fluvium Frigidum (By the Cold River); its historical remains can still be seen today. If our guests’ path leads them trough the nearby villages, thus also trough one of the most beautiful cultural monuments of Slovenia – the Vipavski Križ (Vipava Cross) village, they can observe homesteads which are characteristic of the Vipava Valley region with their distinct rooftops, stone staircases and arcades, underground passes, stone details, wooden balconies and decoratively painted pallets. They can also found wells, mills, outside chimneys …

Natural heritage
The area of Ajdovščina has always been conditioned by environmental influences. Geological changes have left many impressions of life in stone – flysch, sandstone, limestone, dolomite, fossils and corals. You can visit the town museum and see the fossil collection. The Mediterranean climate conditions temperatures and living creatures in nature. Region’s distinct feature is burja (a northern to north-eastern wind blowing in gusts) which moulds the life in the valley.

Vipava wine route

The Vipava Wine Route winds through 27 winegrowing villages in the Upper Vipava Valley. The local winegrowers cultivate vineyards spreading over 2200 hectares (app. 5400 acres) and produce the excellent Vipava wines. A tour of one of the wine cellars is a must on your visit of the Vipava Valley.

Youth hostel Ajdovščina decided to offer our guests the ability to test Vipava wines.

Archeological heritage
The two most important archeological sites within the region are the Roman fort with its wall and towers named Castra and the Roman fort Ad Pirum at Hrušica. Besides these, there are many other archeological sites located in the Vipava Valley.

Ecclesiastical heritage
The Upper Vipava Valley has an extremely rich ecclesiastical heritage, for each and every village has its own church. Within a distance of 15 kilometers from Črniče to Podnanos, our guest can visit dozens of churches, chapels and plague columns, which amaze us with their ecclesiastical art. In Vipavski Križ there is also an operating Capuchin Monastery.
