Cultural and historical heritage

Ajdovščina traces its roots back to the 3rd century AD. In that period, the Romans set up a fortress called Ad Fluvium Frigidum ("by the frigid river") on the banks of the Hubelj whose remains survive until the present day. Roaming through the surrounding villages, including Vipavski Križ, which is touted as one of the finest cultural monuments in the country, you will discover typical Vipava farmhouses with their signature roofs, stone staircases and arcades, passages, stone details, wooden balconies and intricately painted clay tablets as roof elements. There are also beautiful wells, mills, external chimneys and other charming details to be found.
